The competition is a nationwide hunt to find New Zealand’s most “stylish and confident” spec wearer. Research commissioned by Specsavers in 2015 found that nearly half (46 percent) of glasses-wearing New Zealanders feel more confident while in their prescription eyewear.
Those keen on entering have to submit a photo of themselves in glasses to Specsavers’ website.
Judges will select six Kiwi finalists from around the country will be flown on a VIP trip to Auckland to have a professional photoshoot and glasses style consultation.
From the finalists, one will be picked to be flown on an all-expenses paid trip to New York to meet Kim Cattrall, as well as a year’s supply of designer glasses from Specsavers.
Cattrall has been wearing glasses since she was a child, and says she’s excited to be on the judging panel.
“I love that a pair of glasses can make me feel powerful and confident or whimsical and romantic – whatever I feel like that day. I’m hoping this will be reflected in the entries as we search for the next Spectacle Wearer of the Year,” she says.
The Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition is now in its sixth year. Previous ambassadors for the competition that have ventured down under include Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria and Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks.
This year, Cattrall will be judging alongside fashion designer Alex Perry and celebrity hair and makeup artist Kath Gould.
“Kim, Kath and I have teamed up to find the New Zealander who wears their glasses with confidence, and we’ll be looking for entries that show off a bit of personality. As someone who has been designing glasses for a number of years now, I know how important the right pair of frames can be,” Perry says.
Specsavers has 52 stores across New Zealand with a variety of brands stocked within them, including Country Road, Tommy Hilfiger and Love Moschino.
