To celebrate Wellington’s World of Wearable Art (WOW) competition, locally owned retailer Hurricane Jeans has a secret weapon up its sleeve. It employed the help of tailor to the stars, Levi’s Haus of Strauss’ Matt Stone, to design some eye-catching wearable artworks for its window.rn
Stone has created custom clothings for celebrities worldwide, including UK songstress Lilly Allen and rock band the Black Keys.
The window installation he is the brains behind was named ‘A moment of clear confusion.’
Stone says he has always been drawn to the space between heaven and hell.
he said he also wanted to explore the idea of salvation and destruction and draw that into part of the denim.
Hurricane Jeans owner David Byrne said he got Stone on board as he wanted to take a unique approach to WOW this year.
“As a proudly independent retailer, this is one of the ways we thank locals who’ve supported us for years. WOW is important to Wellington and we wanted to recognise and celebrate that, alongside our long, proud partnership with Levi’s.”
He says while the denim jackets may be almost unrecognisable, they’re still totally wearable and celebrate the creativity and innovation at the heart of the WOW event.
The windows will stay on display at Hurricane Jeans’ store on 53 Manners St until 9 October.
Hurricane Jeans has been Wellington owned and operated for over 25 years.
Byrne is fourth generation retailer in the area and also owns Fusion Surf Skate in Cuba St and Miss Wong Clothier in College St in Wellington.
