Books, sporting equipment and and garden shops all experienced a hefty increase in sales, while jewellery experienced a 13 percent drop.
However, the spending increase across all sectors for Father’s Day was moderate, only increasing 0.1 percent.
Surprisingly, spending on car accessories only increased 0.3 percent, while spending at florists increased 7.7 percent.
Overall in August, spending declined 0.8 percent from the month previous.
Housing related retailers experienced slow growth over the month, while hospitality merchants experienced a boost.
Patterns were inconsistent across different regions and sectors, so the slowing in spending can’t be attributed to any one reason.
