The first stage of Queentown’s Five Mile retail development is open to the public and boasts arguably the best backdrop in the business. The site is spread over 14,000 square metres and is home to retailers such as Briscoes, Warehouse Stationery and Number One Shoes.
The redevelopment has cost $130 million and will eventually accommodate 800 carparks, food and beverage sites, offices, apartments and a childcare centre.
Australasian design firm The Buchan Group was behind the architecture, planning, interior and graphics of the site, which is located beside Queenstown Airport.
The Buchan Group principal David Thornton said the inspiration for the design was to create an inviting gateway to Queenstown that showcased its scenic beauty.
“Our vision was to design a development befitting the region that reflected the unique characteristics of the stunning surrounding vistas,” he said.
“This meant not only designing a modern retail centre that was appealing to locals and visitors, but also one that was suitably striking for one of the best locations in the Frankton and Shotover region.”
He says the form, texture and colour of the buildings reflects the alpine landscape of the region, as well as the “jagged landscape” of the Remarkables.
“As a result, the rooflines are angled and steeped, creating a sharp silhouette against the sky, the horizon, and shadows on adjacent buildings and on the ground.
“The buildings also frame view shafts to Double Cone, Peninsula Hill, Cecil peak and Walter Peak, ensuring the development highlights these natural assets.”
Countdown, Briscoes, Rebel Sport, Warehouse Stationery, Number One Shoes, Supercheap Auto, ANZ Bank, Tank, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lighting Plus, No One Shoes, AMI, Hello World Travel, Dick Smith Electronics are now all open for business.
Stage two of the site will be anchored by The Warehouse and Noel Leeming, which will both have stores of 5000 and 1040 square metres. Look Sharp is also joining the fray, with a 715 square metre site for its first South Island store.
The Five Mile Centre will take up 27,000 metres of commercial and retail upon completion.
