Numbers at Auckland’s newest mall are on the rise, despite claims the centre was a ‘ghost town’ after it opened in October last year. It is now fully leased and customers are changing their habits to include the centre, with more visiting every month.
Listed property company Stride Property owns the $155 million Massey mall. It’s part of the Westgate Town Centre development, and is due to open its second stage on September 29.
NorthWest Centre manager Simone van Delft says housing projects, wider Westgate Town Centre developments and public transport network upgrades have taken longer than expected, impacting initially forecasted visitor numbers.
“Retailers are very positive though, especially with stage two coming along. The council’s public library and community space will also be a drawcard.”
There has had to be a shift in people’s routines to get them through the door, but once they experience the centre they become repeat visitors more often than not, van Delft says.
“We’re changing routines and building new ones so it takes more than a few visits to do that.”
Customer numbers are now growing every month, she says.
The centre has run a series of marketing events to showcase what is on offer, which has been a success.
A Winter Wonderland with free ice-skating for primary school-aged children was opened today to get people involved during the school holidays.
With the addition of STA Travel filling the last available kiosk, the shopping centre is now fully leased. Stage two, NorthWest Two, is fully leased with restaurants and cafes and is finishing up deals for the retail spaces.
Restaurants include Goode Brothers Bar and Restaurant, Cleaver & Co, Casablanca, Han San, Wagamama, Sushi Tomi and Nando’s. There is space for 19 retail outlets, at NorthWest Two, which is opposite the original mall.
The $37 million retail and office expansion includes four buildings being constructed by Fletcher Construction.
Construction hasn’t affected the existing mall in a negative way, which van Delft says is likely because there is already so much construction in the area.
The shopping centre is part of a 56 hectare project to create a new town centre at Westgate. The development includes a new library, community rooms and Citizens Advice Bureau, an entertainment and lifestyle precinct and 6 hectares of park space.
The addition of NorthWest Two will be an asset to the area, van Delft says.
“A lot of customers say they don’t have a space nearby with multiple strong dining options, so this is a real opportunity to provide variety for the growing local community which is currently underserved.”
“We’re offering visitors the long-term leisure and family entertainment options we know they’re after.”
NorthWest Two will open on September 29, in time for the school holidays. Construction of the library will start next year.
