David Jones names a date for its New Zealand store opening

Days shy of a year since first announcing it would take over Wellington heritage department store Kirkcaldie & Stains, Australian retailer David Jones has announced an opening date for the store.

The Wellington outlet, its first international store, will open its doors on July 28 this year. David Jones says the store will feature the same design aesthetic as its Eastland, Melbourne outlet, which opened last year, also citing its new flagship at Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast.

Like Kirkcaldie & Stains, the department store will offer a café. It will operate across three floors, stocking fashion, beauty, accessories and home products. David Jones promises an enhanced customer experience with “inspiring spaces and dynamic visual merchandising”.

A number of new brands will be introduced to the market, including beauty brands Tom Ford and Benefit.

Chief operating officer David Thomas says: “We are well underway with the internal refurbishment of the beautiful building we will occupy on Lambton Quay and we look forward to opening a flagship store in the heart of New Zealand’s thriving capital, Wellington.”

“We’re dedicated to delivering a world class department store in Wellington and are confident we will exceed expectations when we open in July. Customers can expect an exciting mix of local and international brands in a premium environment with a comprehensive range of services. We are bringing a truly special retail experience to this cosmopolitan city.”

Kirkcaldie & Stains closed its doors for the last time on January 16. The listed company remains active on the NZX and has been targeted by a takeover offer from Mercantile NZ. Its offer of $3 per share expires on June 12. Kirkcaldie & Stains chair Falcon Clouston advised shareholders today not to sell, instead promising a cash distribution of $3.50-$3.60 on the winding up of the company.
