Those of you juggling a retail career with parenting are likely to be well aware of ‘Shopkins’, but for the rest of us, the existence of collectible anthropomorphic stock units may come as a surprise. The Australian-made toys are based on grocery and department store items and include everything from a manga-eyed box of chocolates to ‘Flushes’ the toilet.

The Australian-made toys are based on grocery and department store items and include everything from a manga-eyed box of chocolates to ‘Flushes’ the toilet.

Shopkins are made by Moose Toys. They’re angled towards collectibility and come designated as ‘common’, ‘rare’ and ‘ultra rare’ depending on availability – as of early this year, more than 240 million Shopkins had been sold worldwide. The line entered the US and UK in 2014 and in January this year, the ‘Shopkins 12-pack’ was named in the US as the best-selling toy of 2015.

The toys are also supported by a video series released on YouTube. It’s definitely a new take on retail!
