Design firm The Buchan Group grows its Auckland office

The retail design firm behind some of New Zealand’s most popular shopping centres, The Buchan Group, has appointed two new principals to its Kiwi practice. It says these appointments follow recent strong growth in New Zealand.

The two incoming principals, Rob Guild and Robert McFarlane, both have a passion for architecture and design, says Auckland practice principal David Thornton.

“Rob and Robert not only increase the firm’s leadership base in New Zealand, but also bolster our skills and expertise particularly in mixed-use.”

Since joining The Buchan Group in 2013, Guild has been the project architect for the Waitakere Mega Centre, Tauranga Crossing Shopping Centre, Auckland Airport retail upgrade, SkyCity Hotel Hamilton and the Long Bay Town Centre.

The Buchan Group managing director Greg Sheehan says, “While New Zealand continues to grow in the retail and commercial markets, the mixed-use sector is showing great strength and the appointment of both Robert and Rob adds to our capacity to remain at the leading edge of this field.”

The Buchan Group won the 2016-2017 Asia Pacific Property Awards for Retail Development and Retail Architecture for its work on NorthWest Shopping Centre at Westgate. The $155 million centre, owned by Stride Property, debuted on October 1 last year and houses around 100 shops.

Its design was intended to hark back to the history of viticulture in the Westgate area, centre manager Jennifer Andrews told NZRetail magazine at the time.

“The architect in the concept phase of building looked to integrate natural elements,” she says.

“You’ll notice that the retail designs reflect the architectural designs. They’ve integrated natural materials, wood, raw concrete, those sorts of elements. It makes it look very appealing.”
