US swimwear brand casts 56-year-old bikini model

Swimsuits For All has already been a trailblazer in its industry by having plus-sized women in past campaigns, but its recent addition of a 56-year-old model is even more inspiring. In the photo, the model, Nicola Griffin, works a gold bikini and in her own words, “white hot hair”.rn

Considering silver-haired models are usually only spotted in retirement ads, the shot of Griffin is pretty bold.

rnWhat’s bolder is that the ad will appear in the latest Sports Illustrated magazine on February 16 – a publication that’s usually filled with slim, young models.

“People think you lose your sex appeal as you get older—but that’s a myth,” Griffin said in a statement. “I’ve never felt sexier.”

Debunking any ageism, racism and ‘sizeism’, Ashley Graham, a famous plus-size model, and African American model and activist Philomena Kwao star alongside Griffin in the campaign.

Swimsuits For All says the three diverse models embody “a shift in the traditional notions of a bikini body”.

rnConsidering Griffin is the oldest women to appear in Sports Illustrated since it begun in 1964, the company is definitely pushing the envelope.

This follows the inclusive nature of other retail advertising campaigns of recent, including H&M’s ‘Close the Loop’ ad that showcased a diverse range of religions, sizes and genders, as well as the debut of the new range of Barbies in different shapes and sizes.
