New Zealand shopping centres roll out unique Christmas attractions

Shopping centres are diverging from the traditional Santa meet and greets into more creative Christmas celebrations. Mall festivities in 2015 so far have included augmented reality Christmas experiences, choirs outside stores and giant Christmas presents. rn

Packing a punch by differentiating itself is Kiwi Property, which owns and operates Sylvia Park and LynnMall in Auckland, Centre Place in Hamilton, The Plaza in Palmerston North, North City in Porirua and Northlands in Christchurch.

From tomorrow, it will be showcasing a New Zealand first through a Christmas-themed augmented reality experience in all six of its centres.

Four different scenes featuring animated snowmen, yetis, penguins and reindeers will be available for free for customers to experience. They can interact with the characters in real time and choose how their experience goes.

Kiwi Property general manager of retail Karl Retief says technology is changing, so its malls are changing with it.

“We’ve looked at how engaging augmented reality can be and worked hard to create a unique set of experiences for our loyal shoppers,” Retief says.

“We really can’t wait to see how customers interact with this technology. We’ve had a great time developing the experience with our partners and it’s the first time anything of its kind has been offered by a New Zealand shopping centre.”

The displays will be on from Tuesday 1 December to Wednesday 23 December.

Elsewhere, other malls are striving to be different.

Bayfair Mall in Mount Maunganui is offering customers the chance to unwrap and win a present each day in the build up to Christmas.

It’s reminding customers of the competition through a giant present in the middle of its mall.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

Exciting things have been happening at Bayfair! … Have you seen our Giant Christmas Present?

Milford Mall in Auckland’s North Shore is hosting a Christmas breakfast with Santa in its food court on the 12 and 13 December.

Even the shops are getting in on the action. Farmers at Westfield St Lukes recently had a choir singing Christmas carols outside its store on its Thursday late night shopping night.

Auckland CBD’s classic Christmas attractions are still going strong – the giant Santa is nestled above Farmers new Queen St store, while Smith & Caughey’s animated window display is exciting customers for another year.

It’s themed around ‘The Night Before Christmas’ story written by Clement C. Moore.

We will continue to compile this list of Christmas-themed activities and decorations in stores and malls. If you’ve seen or are doing anything awesome, email us at editor@theregister.co.nz.
