+ What was the last purchase you were excited about, and why?
A new couch. We have had the same couch for over 10 years and got it from Target when we first moved in together. It’s been through years of being stomped and climbed on by the kids, having food mashed into it and things wiped off it. Her name is Maxine and she has been loyal but the love affair is over. It’s not her, it’s us. (It’s sort of her, as her underside is broken and being held up with a dictionary.)
+ Can you tell me about a retail experience you’ve had that was exciting or interesting?
I’m very excited by interiors at the moment and nice bits ‘n bobs to decorate the home. So I usually get quite excited when I’m in fancy interior stores. I love how things are displayed, it’s a feast for my eyes. Simon James Concept Store, Father Rabbit, Country Road Home, Superette, The Department Store, Gorman. I love it all.
+ What was your worst retail experience?
I’m sorry to name and shame but here I go anyway: it was a shop in St Lukes that rhymes with ‘The Rody Rhop’. The girl working there just looked at me as if I was the worst person in the world and it was a major inconvenience to her that I was in the shop. It made me feel so bad, I never go in there now. Usually they are lovely but this one occasion really put me off. Sometimes that’s all it takes, one personal or non-personal experience and you are out of there.
+ Tell me about a purchase that’s solved a problem for you.
I’d been looking for a rug for ages but didn’t want to spend a lot. I was so happy to find what I was looking for at Gorman on Nuffield St. The staff were so wonderful and happy and welcoming and when we found that there was only the shop floor rug left in stock, they vacuumed it and gave me a discount and I was able to take it home, where it is now pride of place.
+ Can you think of any item or service that would be useful to you but doesn’t exist yet?
An app that collects information from stores so that if I’m looking for a pink jumper, for example, I can type that in and it can show me where I’ll find pink jumpers in the area I am in at that time.
+ What’s an item that you’re planning on buying soon?
I’m not planning on buying anything actually. I’m in lockdown after the rug and couch.
+ What’s your favourite store?
I don’t have one favourite store in Auckland, I love so many different ones for different reasons. Actually, I love Farro. Sometimes I find myself there up to three times a week just looking at all the nice jars of things, like a strange jar-loving weirdo.
