A new initiative from Foodstuffs caught consumers’ eyes this week when More FM snapped a picture of a bulk bin style station for chopped vegetables and put it on Facebook. Nearly 8,000 people have liked the post, and almost 2,000 have commented.
Some top comments bring up concerns around the sliced vegetables drying out or going rotten in the bins, but others applaud the supermarket for encouraging time-poor customers to make healthy choices.
In a statement released today, Foodstuffs North Island says the pick and mix selection has been in place for some time. It implied the vege bins are an initiative that the stores put together independently: “Foodstuffs North Island applauds the stores for their innovative and creative way to deliver our fresh produce in a manner that suits our busy customer’s needs and adds another element to their shopping experience.”
Foodstuffs has also confirmed it will roll out its popular recyclable meat trays across New World and Pak’n Save stores early next year. The trays were trialed in 19 stores this year and gained vocal support from an enthusiastic public. Ninety percent of customers surveyed by Foodstuffs said they preferred the recyclable trays.
Mike Sammons, sustainability manager, Foodstuffs New Zealand Ltd says by moving to the recyclable trays, the company will avoid sending the equivalent of 700 rugby pitches worth of polystyrene to landfill each year.
“Being the first to introduce a packaging solution that is so completely different is a bold move but we know it’s what our customers want and also what they expect from us,” Sammons says. “We are proud to partner with Alto Packaging to bring a unique butchery tray design to the market place, this helps solve a very long running global environmental issue.”
As well as being recyclable, the new meat trays are made of 50 percent recycled material. Foodstuffs says it aims to make its packaging 100 percent recyclable at kerbside or instore, and will this month launch a new soft plastic packaging recycling project in Auckland.
