The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery and Jeanswest win Retail Employer of the Year

The awards process works by encouraging past and present retail staff, as well as the general public, to vote for the retail company they think would be the best place to work at.

The voter decides what they want to base their vote on, but is asked to consider points such as team environment, people management style and employee retention.

To ensure voting is fair, winners are divided into three categories: under 100 employees, 101 to 1000 employees and 1001 or more employees.

The awards were launched in 2011 by Retail World to recognise retailers that people want to work for.

They are also run across the ditch, with Australian retailers Karen Miller, TS 14+ and Jeanswest announced as this year’s winners.

Retail World marketing manager Jane Bennett says common themes seen in voters’ comments included work culture creating a flexible, supportive environment, structured training on offer, community involvement and the clear opportunity to grow a career in retail.

The Warehouse said on LinkedIn that winning the award demonstrates the public’s perception of it being a great place to work.

“The Warehouse Group is playing a leadership role promoting retail as a career in New Zealand and ensuring it is a desirable career choice,” it said.

Warehouse Stationery said in addition to its award, it has been awarded a six-year league award recognising its consistency after six years of high-engagement results.

Jeanwest said it is thrilled to have been recognised both in Australia and New Zealand.

“Winning the large category in Australia and the small category in New Zealand, it reiterates our dedication to supporting our employees whether it be with benefits, training or helping them to achieve their professional goals,” it said.

The only retailer that has previously beaten the Warehouse before its four-year streak was McDonalds in 2011, while Amazon Surf held the title before Warehouse Stationery in 2012.
