Before that, he was a senior manager at Fletcher Wood Panels and Ernst & Young.
Mitre 10 CEO Neil Cowie says Washington brings a deep understanding of retail as well as finances to the company.
Heard, the new general manager of trade, has had nearly 25 years experience in the construction sector.
He was most recently the New Zealand country manager for Tasman Insulation for Fletcher Building.
He was also the category manager for Placemakers from 2004 to 2006 and its solutions manager for Placemakers from 2006 to 2009.

Cowie says the pair will bring substantial knowledge and experience to the company.
“These appointments follow a comprehensive search of the marketplace in New Zealand and we are delighted with the experience Matthew and Derek will bring to the table,” Cowie says.
Heard will officially start with Mitre 10 on 1 October and Washington will join mid-October.
