Racy vintage signage leaves Auckland’s K Rd

Karangahape Rd seems to be cleaning up its act. JLL director of research and capital markets Justin Kean tipped Auckland’s red light district as the next Queen St in July, and now The Pleasure Chest’s famous vintage signage is coming down.

Those with a soft spot for the faded, topless Vegas Girl on the western end of the street will be relieved to know she seems to still be going strong, but her sisters at now-defunct adult store The Pleasure Chest are for sale on Trade Me.

Bidding has been fierce for the pink and purple signage, with prices hitting $260 by this afternoon.

The auction closes on Thursday, and can be found here.

Chief executive of the Karangahape Road Business Association, Barbara Holloway, says The Pleasure Chest’s former building has been renovated and is now ready for a new tenant. She said the plans behind it were “mysterious” but it appeared to be available for rent.

Holloway says K Rd has an extremely low vacancy rate for retail and its future appears bright. She praised the upcoming renovation of St Kevin’s Arcade for preserving the character of the building and retaining most of the current retail tenants.

“There’s lots of amazing new boutique-type owner operator stores opening up.”

The new apartments currently being installed will drive foot traffic, she says. Holloway sees K Rd becoming a transport hub as a planned cycleway and central rail loop take off.
