The store has around 10 staff and is nestled in Kaikorai Valley in Dunedin.
Retailer Jonathan Usher oversees the shop, as well as five other Z stations in the South Island.
On the side, Usher is a comedy magician. Z Energy encourages its staff to be a part of the local community, he says.
“I do a couple of hundred shows a year – it’s one of those things that’s opened a lot of doors for me, it’s great from a business point of view because people know who I am and what I do and who I work for, for promotion and awareness,” he says.
“I think that has certainly helped with our customers voting for us because they see what we do in the community.”
He says the Z Valley station is a community service station that’s well supported by a diverse customer base of locals, nearby businesses and schools.
He credits Z’s customer service to attributing to the win, as staff go through comprehensive training.
“It’s not about serving the customers, taking their money and getting them out of there – we’re trying to make the experience a positive one because we’re in a competitive industry,” He says.
“We try to wow our customers and have the ‘Z’ factor.”
The runner up to Z Valley was another one of the retailer’s stores, Z Mosgiel.
Usher says there was competition between the two in the build up to the Top Shop Awards to try to get more votes, but it wasn’t too cut-throat.
“It was more like two site leaders trying to give each a bit of grief, good fun and good natured stuff,” he says.
In the end, he says the full credit goes to the store’s staff and customers.
“I’m so proud more than anything. It’s a win for the team and our customer, not me.”
