For the 2015 WOW Retail Competition, retailers are invited to be part of a competition for visitors to Wellington which sees them go into a draw to visit the WOW exhibition in Honolulu when they purchase an item from a participating store. Stores will also go on a retail map which will be sent out to WOW attendees before they arrive in Wellington.
Positively Wellington Tourism events marketing executive Jess Wilson says the window dressing competition had been scrapped because her organisation had been contacted by retailers who said they would like to take part, but were limited by constraints on window appearances from their head offices.
She says the new competition is aimed at getting retailers a slice of the financial pie from those visiting Wellington for the WOW awards show. The 2014 season attracted over 53,000 people.
“It’s not about window dressing this year, we’re trying to get attendees to make more purchases.”
Wilson says she had heard some retailers say it was a shame to no longer have the window-dressing competition, but she had got the impression that some would go ahead and dress their windows in a WOW-inspired theme anyway.
The retail competition was initially announced as closing yesterday, but registrations have now been extended until midnight on Wednesday 19 August. It is restricted to retailers based in downtown Wellington, Wellington Airport and parts of Kilbirnie. Participating stores will also go into a draw to win a return trip for two to any Air New Zealand airport in the country.
