BeauKayes florist took out the Lower North Island’s People’s Choice Award at last night’s Top Shop awards.
The florist shop, which is based in Taradale, opened in April last year and has since been thriving, owner Kaye van Booma says.
“Some people would say ‘It’s lovely playing with flowers’ but it’s really a seven day a week job with lots of behind the scenes work,” van Booma says.
“It’s wonderful, I’m loving it.”
She says they are over the moon to receive the award and thinks the win comes down to treating customers the way they should be treated.
“I think it comes down to good old fashioned, polite, customer service and going that extra mile,” van Booma says.
“I’m quite particular with customer service, as without the customers we don’t have a business. There’s five of us that work in the shop and we’re all customer focused and know the importance of making it an experience to shop with us.”
Van Booma has been a florist for 20 years. The majority of her floristry work for her and four other staff comes from weddings and funerals, as well as walk-ins and phone calls.
The shop makes an effort to use locally made or grown produce where possible and is a supporter of buying local and supporting the community.
What goes around, comes around, as when it came time to vie for a place as a Top Shop finalist, the community banded together to support BeauKayes florist.
Van Booma says everyone from local schools to banks in Taradale all got behind the business and voted for it.
“All of the local shops supported us; we’re really lucky to have that. But we also put ourselves out there and promote ourselves,” van Booma says.
She says they’re very thankful to customers that voted for them and continue to support them.
