The company board announced late last year that Hellings was stepping down after 15 years. He has been with Smiths City for 30 years in total.
Board chair Craig Boyce acknowledged Hellings’ successful leadership, saying he had led the group through many periods of disruption and intense competition.
Campbell starts his new role on May 1. He will be based in Christchurch with his family.
Boyce praised Campbell’s experience in the retail sector: “The board see Roy’s expertise best summed into three key areas – 30 years of experience and passion for retail, both in New Zealand and internationally; a highly successful and transformative leader of business and people capability; and a committed focus on results.”
Campbell comes to Smiths City from a temporary role as transitional director of Duty Free St Thomas, which is part of the Penha Group in the Caribbean. He worked in New Zealand with Mobil, Lion and DEKA during the 1980’s and 90’s before heading offshore in 2007 to pursue opportunities in Bulgaria and beyond.
