Burger King is paying for a Whopper of an event

The young couple live in the Illinois town of New Berlin. A local paper, the State Journal-Register, has reported that the pair have been collectively known as “Burger King” since childhood.

King told the paper that the term was coined by a motivational speaker who visited her and Burger’s school. He asked the pair to stand up as he wanted to thank them for their help in setting up his presentation.

“As soon as he said, ‘Joel Burger and Ashley King,’ he started to laugh out loud and pronounced we were ‘Burger King,’” she says.

State Journal-Register staff writer Dave Bakke says he contacted Burger King’s PR representative about the publicity opportunity after King had tried unsuccessfully to get in touch. The couple had announced their engagement with a picture taken next to the Burger King logo in Springfield.

“When we heard about the happy, Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage,” Burger King brand spokesman Eric Hirschhorn told the State Journal-Register. “On so many levels it felt like fate; they found each other and their story found us.”

Burger and King were told that Burger King would pick up the tab for their wedding earlier this week. The package on offer includes Burger King crowns.

Hirschhorn told the paper that Burger King knew deep in its heart that it wanted to honour the Burger-King union in an “unforgettable way.”

“Everyone at Burger King Brand agreed and, as Dave Bakke said, we knew we wanted to create a ‘whopper of a wedding’ that’s uniquely their own.

“And now we hope we’ve swept them off their feet. All we ask in return is that they live happily ever after.”
