Westfield’s Albany mall stays closed due to burst water pipe

The mall closed at 6pm on Thursday after it had no running water, cutting short one of its two late-night shopping nights.

Westfield said in Facebook comment that it was aiming to reopen at 1pm today, but it has remained closed, missing out on another late night shopping night.

However, the malls biggest retailers, New World and Kmart, remain open and over 30 portaloos are in place for staff and customers.

Westfield public relations manager Debra McGhie says it’s too early to comment on the financial implications of the water failure or compensation.

“Our focus remains on getting our retailers to a position where they can recommence trade,” McGhie says.

Staff have been kept in the loop by Westfield owner and operator Scentre group via text message updates about whether to come into work or not.

The mall is expected to reopen tomorrow. Watercare says the pipe will be fixed by Saturday morning at the earliest.
