BNZ has a mobile business banking app on offer. Like the app for private customers, the business app allows users to check their balances, make transfers between accounts in New Zealand currency and pay bills to existing payees. In addition, retailers with the app can:
- authorise international payments, direct credit, payroll, and tax payments
- create and authorise one-off payments to any domestic bank account including to any New Zealand issued VISA, MasterCard, and American Express (excluding Diners) credit cards
- search account transactions to see if payments have been made or received (iPhone only)
- export account transactions as a CSV file (iPhone only)
- find the nearest BNZ Partners Centre, store, or ATM
Existing customers with BNZ Internet Banking for Business can download the app and get started.
BNZ also offers another useful mobile product – PayClip. PayClip is a portable card reading device which fits into the headphone socket of a smartphone or tablet and connects with a free app. It allows retailers to process payments from Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards on the spot using 3G, 4G or wi-fi data.
The company says payments can go through as early as the next business day, removing the need to chase up invoices. PayClip payments are also reviewable through the BNZ Merchant Portal online, making it simple to process refunds.
Each PayClip device will process around 2500 transactions once charged. It costs $10 per device, and a service fee of 3.25 percent of the total monthly value of the merchant’s successful transactions.
ASB has come up with a similar point-of-sale solution called ASB Accept mPOS. This small device pairs with ASB’s Payment Interface app to transform 3G or wi-fi connected Apple devices into a wireless payment terminal which accepts eftpos and credit card payments on the spot.
The bank’s executive general manager of technology and innovation, Russell Jones, says ASB Accept mPOS is the first in a planned series of payment innovations. He says the service is instant and secure.
“New Zealand businesses will now be able to accept payments while out and about visiting customers with the added assurance of card-present technology that is fully chip and pin compliant for improved security and unprecedented convenience.”
“This means, for example, that tradespeople visiting customers at home will be able to accept a payment securely as soon as the work has been completed. Customers will also be able to pay with either eftpos or credit card, a choice that not all other mobile payment terminals in New Zealand currently offer.”
The mPOS terminal will accept all types of card transactions, handling swipe, chipped or contactless cards. It also allows merchants to email customers their receipts instantly, and a print-capable terminal is available.
The Payment Interface app will allow users to set up multiple users, split bills and accept multiple payments methods across one bill. Jones said that in a hospitality situation, this would allow diners to split their bill and pay using different methods right at the table.
He said the planned roadmap of development for ASB’s mPOS would allow for native development of applications that could be installed on the device in the future.

We are looking forward to working with businesses and app developers in the future to develop a comprehensive range of useful and practical new applications.”
