The countdown begins to Countdown’s new managing director

Dave Chambers, managing director of Countdown, has announced plans to leave his role in June after 39 years working for the business.

Effective from June 30, Chambers will end his almost four decades within Progressive Enterprises. Chambers says he is confident he is leaving the business in good hands, with the new taker of the role yet to be announced.

“I am delighted with the transformational work we have undertaken around team culture and  I am also proud of the way Countdown leads the industry in a number of important ways, including being New Zealand’s first supermarket to phase-out caged eggs and single use plastic carrier bags. I’ll miss our team and the incredible rush of retail, but the time feels right to take some time out to travel with my family before looking for a new challenge,” says Chambers.

Chambers was one of Countdown’s 18,000 strong team, but has been hailed by Woolworths Group CEO, Brad Banducci, for working his way from a young student on the top floor to managing director.

“Dave has contributed a huge amount to this business, including moving to Australia at the drop of a hat to help to stabilise our business here, and then, a year later, moving back to New Zealand to implement a new strategic direction for the business there. He leaves our New Zealand business in good heart, and I want to thank him for his important contribution to the Group and wish him well into the future,” says Banducci.

After an international scuffle with an American brewing company that had a beer called 'Rogue', the company has rebranded to be Scapegrace Dry Gin to better promote its product overseas.
