Christchurch’s Merivale Mall development is underway

Christchurch is the fastest-changing retail district in New Zealand right now, with developments in various stages of completion rising from the rubble all over town. The latest to check in is the refurbishment of AMP Capital-run Merivale Mall, which has been underway for nearly a year.

The $10 million Merivale Mall development and refurbishment began in May 2017, and is set to run for 18 months. It will upgrade amenities, common spaces and lighting, and will see store fronts and interiors of the mall’s approximately 40 stores given a fresh and modern refit.

Centre manager Nicola Dolan says the refresh will see Merivale Mall remain “close to the roots” of its community while increasing its appeal.

“The centre is evolving to meet more sophisticated consumer demand and introduce the kinds of trends we’ve started to observe in retail overseas. At a local level, these changes are coming at the perfect time, as Christchurch continues to transform and the population grows in the surrounding suburbs.

“We have enormous confidence in Merivale Mall, which is already an exceptional destination shopping centre and an important part of our portfolio. This investment will protect the centre’s competitive advantage and ensure we can continue to deliver on our long-term plan for our owners.”

Fresh Choice is the mall’s anchor tenant. Its owner Craig Grant says: “We are excited to be bringing a modern new look to Merivale Mall with some fantastic new features for our community. We want to take our customers on an improved shopping journey, from the farmer’s market experience, to an extensive deli-kitchen offer, gourmet foods with a focus on local and artisan and a contemporary everyday florist.”
