Foodstuffs North Island is on the move

Foodstuffs North Island has sold its Silverstream site and is moving operations to Hutt Valley. Wrap-maker Farrah’s is to move into the Silverstream location.

Foodstuffs has sold its massive site located on Kiln Street for an undisclosed sum. The supermarket company site was put up for sale in March.

Foodstuffs North Island general manager of property development, Lindsay Rowles, says the entire 23,500 square metre complex is no longer needed for their 100 staff.

“We’re pleased that it will continue to be used for food purposes as it has been purchased by Upper Hutt company Farrah’s. The family behind Farrah’s have been making tortillas and wraps in the Wellington region since 1999.”

The Farrah's company, run by owners Farrah and Jovan Canak, plan to start construction at the new location in November, turning it into a world class export facility which will add to the continued growth of the region.

Rowles says Foodstuffs is looking for a new premise in the Hutt Valley for their 100 or so staff.

“This is a chance for us to significantly upgrade our office premises for our Wellington staff and provide them with a more modern working environment.”

The sale means Foodstuffs will close its bottling plant at Silverstream in mid-August.

 “We went to market with the idea of leasing back part of the site in order to retain the bottling plant, but in the end, the offer for the entire site made the best economic sense for our business. We have elected to outsource our bottling services to an external supplier,” Rowles says.

The Kiln Street site has a 17,708sqm warehouse and 5,773sqm of office space, with 167 carparks. It was marketed for sale by Bayleys Real Estate.

The Chinese holiday Singles’ Day, popularised by Alibaba as the ’11.11 Global Shopping Festival’, is now the biggest sale event in the world. Alibaba reports that US$25.3 billion of gross merchandise volume was settled during the 24 hours of Singles’ Day this year. Not all of that went to Chinese retailers, however – a handful of Kiwis made the most of the opportunity.
