Auckland’s newest mall NorthWest wins an architecture award

Owned and managed by NZX-listed Stride, NorthWest was designed by Australasian architecture firm the Buchan Group and forms the heart of the new Westgate Town Centre.

The centre recently took out the 2016-2017 Asia Pacific Property Award for Retail Development and Retail Architecture, New Zealand, and received Gold in the NZ Commercial Property Awards. It also received a merit at the Property Council New Zealand Property Industry Awards 2016.

“The centre’s interior design reflects a strong sense of place, embracing the rich tones of the black sand beaches of the nearby rugged West Coast, leafy surrounding vineyards and variety of colourful fruit farms and market gardens surrounding,” said the Buchan Group principal, David Thornton.

After an opening that was surrounded by much fanfare, there were initial reports claiming the centre was a ‘ghost town.’ However, it is now fully leased and is enjoying increasing visitor numbers each month.

Retail space deals at stage two of the development, NorthWest Two, are currently finishing up.

If there's one word that strikes fear into the heart of many Kiwi retailers, it's "Amazon". This massive global business has enormous scale; a turnover nearly two and a half times that of the entire New Zealand retail sector; and a share price of nearly NZD$1,400.
