Upwards and outwards: Who is growing and who is going

As Mecca prepares to move into a larger retail space in Wellington, we have a look at what other retailers are expanding upwards; and who have pulled operations from New Zealand all together. 

Mecca Maxima:

The beauty giant recently announced a successful leasing of a bottom level retail space on Wellington’s Lambton Quay. The site is set to be home to the brands new ‘Mecca’ store, the largest to date. Mecca currently run Mecca Maxima and Mecca Cosmetica. The beauty retailer opened a Wellington Mecca Maxima in April last year, followed by one in Auckland last August.

The brand this year has opened a Takapuna branch, and now has announced plans to open a bigger Mecca location in Wellington, taking over Topshop’s previous housing.

Mecca opened its first New Zealand store in Auckland's Ponsonby in 2007 and has continued to draw crowds in with store openings. Its Auckland Mecca Maxima saw lines forming at 4:30am from those desperate to get their hands on the cosmetic retailer’s 250+ brands.

H&M:

The Swedish retailer has been expanding rapidly into New Zealand since opening its flagship store in Auckland 2016. Since then it has expanded into Queenstown, Wellington and Christchurch in rapid succession. The retailer introduced its Home concept into Wellington and Christchurch a few months prior, and is expected to do the same for its Auckland flagship.

GoodFor:

Popular bulk food retailer GoodFor, branched out and took its success out in east Auckland, opening a new store and distribution centre in Parnell. The move comes less than a year after its launch.

The GoodFor Wholefoods Refillery Ponsonby location opened in March 2017, and has seen 35,000 customers through its doors in just 11 months. The new Parnell site is a variation on the Ponsonby site with more space, higher ceilings and a large communal bench, as success saw the store needing more space. 

Dune London:

The start of this month saw speculation that Dune London had pulled from New Zealand, after closing both its St Lukes store and its Westfield 227 store.

Richard Miles, co-founder of menswear company 3 Wise Men and Dune London’s New Zealand licensee, says Dune London has not retrenched or withdrawn from the New Zealand market, but he’s been forced to put the business on hold for an unknown length of time due to leasing woes. Dune London's flagship was located in Westfield 277, which is now under refurbishment.

Miles says he’s also closed the second Dune London branch at Westfield St Luke’s as his leasing deal with Westfield was a “dual site arrangement”.

Esprit:

Global fashion retailer Esprit is pulling its operations out of New Zealand and Australia. The company, which was founded in California in 1968, announced it was closing six stores in New Zealand and about 61 in Australia. The move will affect 30 staff in New Zealand, and 320 in Australia.

Esprit has had operations in New Zealand since 1980, but will now focus on the Asian market according to a comment from the company.

Avon:

Earlier this year in February, beauty behemoth Avon pulled operations out of New Zealand and Australia. It announced that as part of its strategy to return to long-term sustainable, profitable growth, the company would focus on markets with the greatest potential of future growth. This apparently doesn’t include New Zealand and Australia.

Avon ANZ president and managing director, Sharon Plant described the decision as “a very sad day for our employees and representatives."

The Warehouse Group switches to compostable bags

Following the lead of retailers like Mitre 10, Countdown and New World, The Warehouse Group is transitioning into offering fully compostable bags across the entire company. This means 254 stores from the red sheds; Warehouse Stationery; Noel Leeming and Torpedo7 will no longer offer petroleum-based plastic bags.
