Icebreaker bought by US retail giant

VF Corporation, a US-based footwear and apparel company, has recently added New Zealand label Icebreaker to its list of impressive brands.

The merino wool clothing retailer, which is celebrating its 22 years in business, has been acquired from the company for an undisclosed sum.

Icebreaker was founded by Jeremy Moon, who said the sale of the business was not one to be passed up.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our global Icebreaker team and for our New Zealand wool suppliers to introduce a whole new universe of consumers to the benefits of sustainably farmed, ethically sourced, New Zealand Merino wool.

Moon will stay on with the company, along with chairman Rob Fyfe who has views for the retailer to become a $1 billion brand.

Icebreaker apparel is sold in 47 countries worldwide and this year made more than $220 million in global sales. The company buys 25 per cent of the merino wool New Zealand grows and produces more than four million garments a year.

VF Corporations is based in North Carolina and owns the likes of Timberlands, Vans, Wrangler, Lee Jeans, and The North Face among other powerful brands.
