The modern-day relevance of the bumbag, or fanny pack as it’s known in the US, is becoming more apparent. There’s been a resurgence both on the runway and the street in recent seasons.

‘Tourist fashion’ has been called the biggest upcoming trend for 2018, but more specifically fanny packs are leading the revolution fast.

The tourist staple has long been considered ‘uncool’ and most often sported by sunburnt fathers in Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts. But like many slightly-ugly trends from the 1990s and early 2000s, it’s getting a second wind lately.

If Valentino, Balenciaga, Gucci, Lemaire, and Carven are anything to go by, fanny packs have hit the runways with a vengeance. Bearers can choose from a wealth of different sizes, shapes, colours and price tags.

If you feel like dipping your toes into some alternative ways of carrying your essentials, then prices range from $10-$30 for a basic starter bag or $1000-$3000 for designer wear.

Most packs do not have to be neon-coloured or the size of a small toddler, but these days come in more sophisticated smaller sizing that gives you accessibility while not restricting body motion.

Now that high-end designers are jumping onto the bumbag bandwagon, it’s only a matter of time before fanny pack demand spikes. Every few years designers bring the bag back onto the runway, but it seems now more and more are hoping upon the trend.

The ability to be hands-free while also knowing your items are safe and secure in front of you is a luxury many people are too proud to take advantage of.

Imagine this scenario - you’re traversing town, fanny pack in place secured just above your waist. Your hands sway next to you as you walk, free from carrying any items you may need. You are surrounded by strangers but you need not worry – they can’t sneak a hand into an unwatched bag, or rip away your handbag from your loose uncaring grip. If someone tried to rip off your waist bag, you can guarantee you’ll be going with it.

Safe, stylish, sophisticated, all words associated with this convenient humble carry case. Want to spice things up? Invest in a coloured option to match with any outfit in ensuring maximum style. Why wouldn’t you want to carry — or wear — an incredibly practical bag?

Tourist fashion is slowly making its way over to our shores, and when it steps into our fashion scene you can bet those utilising the convenience only a fanny pack can bring will be ready.
