Kids welcome Bunnings to Grey Lynn

The school, which is a rumaki Maori immersion unit and Te whanau awahou Maori medium unit, was the first community group to benefit from Bunnings when the team came in to help with garden maintenance. Bunnings also donated a worm farm to Mt Albert Primary School and helped renovate the gardens at Kumeu Playcentre.

Sir Graham Henry, the legendary All Blacks coach, was there to answer a few questions. He encouraged the children to study well at school, 'like Ritchie McCaw' and admitted he had a fear of kitsets but a love of gardening and fishing. He officially opened the building.

The $42m build has been in the planning for six years and in the build phase for 19 months. It's suffered some unexpected obstacles but Bunnings Grey Lynn is now officially open with a $3.2m injection into the community via salaries. Bunnings GM New Zealand Jacqui Coombes said of the performance by Newton Central, it was the "most powerful opening we could have expected for our new store."

"I was tearing up, they were phenomenal," she said.
